Dear Logos flock,

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:25-27 (NIV)

We studied the Person of the Holy Spirit this week during our Youth Confirmation Class. We were reminded that the Holy Spirit is not an “it.” The Holy Spirit is a Person sent by the Father and by the Son. In the Scriptures the Holy Spirit is referred to as a Teacher, Counselor, Comforter, and Helper, as well as the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Jesus.

I especially appreciate the role of the Holy Spirit as our Comforter, Counselor and Helper. Before Jesus left this earth, he said to his disciples that when he left he would send them a “Counselor,” another who would “guide them into all the truth” (John 16:13) and “remind you of everything that I have said.” (14:25).

Recently ’70 and ‘80s R&B star Bill Withers passed away. One of his chart-popping singles was Lean On Me. I love the lyrics of the song. It goes, “Lean on me, when you’re not strong, and I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on….” I see the Person of the Holy Spirit doing that in our lives.

The Holy Spirit helps us carry on. He comforts us when we need a friend. He is Someone we can “lean on” and trust to lead us in the Truth when we need guidance and direction. And one of the best things about the Holy Spirit is he will be with us until the “end of the age:” “he will never leave us or forsake us.” (Joshua 1:9; Matthew 28:20, Hebrews 13:5)

Right now, the world is living in a season of cataclysmic uncertainty and change. Many are conjecturing that we will not go back to the way things were before the pandemic. Most of us have a “gut” sense this will be true to some degree, but we’re not sure what life will look like on the other side. And whenever we don’t have confidence about something, we get nervous and anxious.

I am so glad Jesus didn’t leave His followers alone when He left this earth. The Holy Spirit is with us! He will guide us into all the truth. He will comfort us when we feel sad or discouraged. He will remind us of the words and teachings of Jesus and He will show us the right way to go. Amen!

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
